Wigan secured a dramatic victory over St Helens to close out the 2026 Super League Magic Weekend at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. The tightly contested derby was decided in the final moments when St Helens’ Jackson Hastings missed a long-range penalty attempt at the full-time whistle, which would have forced extra time under golden point rules.

The match started with high intensity, with Hastings opening the scoring through a penalty after a late hit by Wigan. Early disciplinary issues saw St Helens full-back Jack Welsby sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, allowing Wigan to capitalise on their numerical advantage with the game’s opening try by Adam Keighran in the 22nd minute. St Helens responded swiftly when Jake Davies crossed for a try just four minutes later.

The first half was marred by a concerning injury to Wigan academy player Nathan Lowe, who appeared to suffer a ruptured hamstring following a push into touch. Lowe briefly lost consciousness due to a drop in blood pressure on his way off the field, causing a stoppage before halftime.

Tempers remained high in the second half, leading to multiple scuffles. Wigan’s Brad O’Neill and Welsby both received sin-bin penalties, with Welsby serving two separate 10-minute spells. With both teams down to 12 players at one point, Wigan extended their lead through tries from Jai Field and Zach Eckersley, the latter proving to be the decisive score.

St Helens hit back late in the match with a try from Welsby, setting up a tense finish. However, Hastings’ final penalty effort to send the game into extra time narrowly missed, sealing the victory for Wigan.

The 2026 Magic Weekend attracted a record crowd since the event began in 2007, with a total attendance of 77,442 over the weekend and a single-day record of 42,903 on Sunday. Hill Dickinson Stadium is scheduled to host the Magic Weekend again next year. Additionally, a £15,000 donation will be made to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, supported by the event’s partnership with Betfred, following a weekend filled with try celebrations.
