Wigan Warriors delivered a commanding performance to overcome York 72-20 in Super League action at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday. The victory marked another step forward for Wigan, who have won seven of their last eight matches and climbed to within two points of the league’s top two positions.
Wigan unleashed an offensive onslaught early, with Sam Eseh opening the scoring. The Warriors quickly extended their lead as Jake Wardle, Noah Hodkinson, and Adam Keighran all registered tries inside the first 15 minutes. Maintaining their dominance, Wigan continued to score freely before halftime with Hodkinson, Jai Field—who crossed twice—and Junior Nsemba all breaking through.
The second half saw Field and Hodkinson complete their hat-tricks, while Bevan French and Jack Farrimond also added to the tally. Wardle secured his second try in the match, further cementing Wigan’s advantage. Despite conceding four late tries to York through Cody Hunter (two), Scott Galeano, and Liam Harris, Wigan’s earlier lead ensured a comprehensive win.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet lauded his team’s ruthlessness and attacking speed but expressed concern about the lack of defensive physicality, particularly during the final stages when York mounted their late rally. “It’ll take a minute to see past the end of the game,” Peet said. “We lacked any kind of physicality when it was time to defend. At times we were very good in terms of the speed and precision of our attack. You can’t take it away from the lads that they were pretty ruthless at times.”
York coach Mark Applegarth acknowledged Wigan’s superiority and accepted responsibility for his team’s defeat. “Wigan were ruthless. We’ve come against a team in the peak of their powers and we certainly found out the hard way,” he said. “You own it and that’s my job as head coach. We got what we deserved.”
Elsewhere, Catalans Dragons secured back-to-back Super League wins by defeating Bradford 34-24, with six tries scored by Zac Lipowitz, Josh Allen, Julian Bousquet, Solomona Faataape, Kruise Leeming, and Charlie Staines.
Meanwhile, St Helens prepare to face Huddersfield despite three consecutive league losses. Coach Paul Rowley emphasized that while confidence remains intact, the focus is on improving competence ahead of their match on Sunday afternoon.
