Wigan Warriors continued their impressive Super League run with a commanding 72-20 victory over York Knights at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday. The win marked Wigan’s seventh triumph in eight matches, moving them to within two points of the league’s top two positions.
Wigan’s offense was relentless from the outset, with Sam Eseh opening the scoring before Jake Wardle, Noah Hodkinson, and Adam Keighran crossed the try line within the first 15 minutes. The Warriors maintained their momentum, extending their lead through multiple try-scorers including Hodkinson, who completed a hat-trick, Jai Field, who also registered three tries, and Junior Nsemba. Bevan French, Jack Farrimond, and a second try from Wardle further contributed to Wigan’s dominant first and second halves.
York managed a late surge with four tries in the final eight minutes, credited to Cody Hunter, who scored twice, Scott Galeano, and Liam Harris. Despite this rally, they were unable to close the wide gap created by Wigan’s clinical attack.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet praised his team’s ruthlessness but expressed mixed feelings about the defensive aspects of the game. “At times we were very good in terms of the speed and precision of our attack,” Peet said. “It felt like we had the ball uninterrupted for a while because we were posting points. You can’t take it away from the lads that they were pretty ruthless at times and we’ve got that speed and skill to play. However, we lacked physicality when it was time to defend, which left a sour taste after the final stages.”
York coach Mark Applegarth acknowledged the strength of the opposition and took responsibility for his team’s performance. “Wigan were ruthless,” Applegarth said. “We’ve come against a team in the peak of their powers and we certainly found out the hard way. You own it and that’s my job as head coach. We got what we deserved.”
Wigan’s dominant display underscored their growing reputation as one of the Super League’s most potent teams, while York will look to regroup following a heavy defeat on the road.
