Larry Sanger, one of Wikipedia’s co-founders, was indefinitely blocked from editing on the platform Monday after advocating for greater intellectual diversity and editorial balance. Sanger, who helped launch Wikipedia alongside Jimmy Wales in 2001 and coined the site's name, recently initiated WikiProject Intellectual Diversity. This project aimed to reinforce what he described as Wikipedia’s original commitment to neutrality and transparency by encouraging underrepresented viewpoints, notably those of Hindus and American conservatives, to have a stronger presence.

The precise reasons behind Sanger’s block were not publicly disclosed. Sanger criticized the decision and the process leading to it, describing the Wikipedia community as a “mob or a blob” where volunteer editors influence each other more than they adhere to a fixed set of rules. He argued that the platform’s most severe disciplinary actions, like blocking an editor indefinitely, lack due process, likening the arbitration system to judgment by a “faceless mob” without formal procedures such as a prosecutor, jury, or chance for a defense.

Sanger has previously challenged the distribution of authority within Wikipedia, asserting that real control lies with a small group of administrators. He identified this group as the “Power 62,” a set of 62 largely anonymous accounts, most of which conceal their owners’ identities. He argued that despite Wikipedia promoting itself as a massive volunteer effort—citing 267,000 contributors in the last month—these administrators wield disproportionate influence.

Following the announcement of his block on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), some Wikipedia editors questioned the appropriateness and speed of the blocking decision, leading to the restoration of Sanger’s editing privileges.

The block was reportedly spearheaded by an active editor known by the username TarnishedPath. This editor has been involved in several controversial editorial actions on Wikipedia, including instigating a year-long moratorium on changes to the site’s “Zionism” article, which critics say locked in a statement equating the movement for Jewish self-determination with ethnic cleansing. TarnishedPath has also pushed for labeling author J.K. Rowling as “anti-trans” or a “transexclusionary radical feminist” (TERF) and placed banners on her Wikipedia page citing a non-neutral perspective.

Despite TarnishedPath’s contentious involvement, Wikipedia administrators recently banned the editor from participating in the Israel-Palestine related topics due to problematic behavior. However, TarnishedPath remained influential in the actions taken against Sanger, contributing to the ongoing debates about editorial control and diversity of viewpoints on the platform.

Sanger’s case highlights tensions within Wikipedia between efforts to promote pluralistic content and the platform’s community governance mechanisms, raising questions about transparency, power dynamics, and fairness in one of the world’s most widely used knowledge resources.
