Kentucky secured a 31-21 upset victory over No. 9 Texas A&M on Saturday, fueled by a dominant third quarter and strong defensive play. The Wildcats, led by rookie head coach Will Stein in his first road game, handed the Aggies their first conference loss of the season and ended Kentucky’s streak without a win over a ranked opponent since 2024.

Quarterback Kenny Minchey, a transfer from Notre Dame, threw two touchdown passes, including a 42-yard strike to wide receiver Kenny Darby early in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 halftime tie. Running back CJ Baxter added two rushing touchdowns on back-to-back drives during the same period, helping Kentucky outgain Texas A&M by 196 yards to 20 in the third quarter alone.

Kentucky’s defense, coordinated by Jay Bateman—who held the same role at Texas A&M for the previous two seasons—played a crucial role in disrupting the Aggies’ offense. Bateman’s scheme pressured Texas A&M’s quarterback Marcel Reed, who completed 26 of 49 passes for 236 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. One notable takeaway came late in the game when defensive back Jordan Castell intercepted Reed near the Wildcats’ 7-yard line.

Kentucky’s victory was bolstered by key stops on fourth down, including an incomplete pass from Texas A&M on a fourth-and-2 from their own 33-yard line, which set up Baxter’s second rushing touchdown late in the third quarter. The Wildcats also managed a 52-yard field goal by Adam Zouagui in the fourth quarter that deflected off the upright before passing through, extending their lead to 31-14.

Texas A&M attempted a late rally, with Reed leading a touchdown drive to narrow the deficit to 31-21 with under four minutes remaining, connecting with Micah Riley for a five-yard score. However, Kentucky’s defense held firm to maintain the lead and secure the upset.

The loss marked a disappointing outcome for Texas A&M, whose coach Mike Elko acknowledged the team was outplayed. "I did not do a good enough job of coaching this team and preparing this team," Elko said. "I don’t take any positives from this game. I don’t want to take away anything from Kentucky. … Kentucky came in here and whopped us."

Kentucky improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference play, while Texas A&M fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SEC. The Wildcats’ performance demonstrated marked improvement following a heavy second-half defeat to then-No. 12 Alabama the previous week, when they surrendered a 32-0 scoring run after halftime. Stein emphasized the team’s determination to avoid a repeat performance, with Minchey stating the players resolved "not to be denied."

This victory represents a milestone for Kentucky and provides momentum as the Wildcats continue their SEC campaign under Stein’s leadership.
