Indonesia is experiencing a sharp rise in respiratory infections linked to hazardous wildfire pollution, with the number of cases more than doubling in just over a week, according to data from the country’s health ministry. The latest figures show 113,336 people afflicted with respiratory issues as of September 9, up from 50,891 reported on September 1.
Widespread fires have engulfed forests and peatlands across the Indonesian archipelago, particularly in the provinces of Sumatra and Borneo. This wildfire season is the most severe Indonesia has faced in 11 years, driven by weather conditions associated with a "super-El Niño" event that has led to elevated temperatures and exacerbated fire activity.
The resulting emissions from these blazes have skyrocketed, currently accounting for about one-third of the global total according to environmental assessments. The intense pollution has produced pervasive haze that has affected more than 12.5 million people across seven provinces.
Health officials have linked the surge in respiratory problems to the inhalation of fine particulate matter and other toxins released by the peat and forest fires. The Ministry of Health has been monitoring the situation closely as medical facilities report increasing patient numbers presenting with symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and other lung infections.
Efforts to control the fires remain ongoing, with emergency response teams and local authorities deploying resources to contain hotspots. However, challenges persist due to the vast area affected and dry conditions aggravated by the ongoing weather patterns.
The government has also urged residents in affected regions to take precautions such as wearing masks and limiting outdoor activities to reduce exposure to the hazardous air. Meanwhile, public health officials continue to provide guidance and support to health care providers managing the rise in respiratory illnesses.
This year’s wildfire crisis underscores the growing risks posed by climate variability and land management practices in Indonesia, a country frequently affected by seasonal fires that generate significant environmental and public health impacts both locally and across Southeast Asia.
