Wilem Frischmann, a pioneering structural engineer whose innovations enabled the construction of skyscrapers on London’s challenging clay foundations, died on August 20, 2026, at age 95 after a long illness. A Holocaust survivor of Hungarian-Jewish descent, Frischmann’s career transformed Britain’s urban skyline and advanced global engineering practice.
Born in 1931 in Ungvar, Czechoslovakia (now Uzhhorod, Ukraine), Frischmann and his family were deported to Auschwitz in 1944. While his parents and younger sister were killed, he and his brother survived a forced march to Buchenwald. At 14, he was flown to Britain as a refugee and educated at schools for displaced Jewish children before studying building technology at Imperial College London and earning a PhD on erecting tall buildings on clay.
Frischmann joined CJ Pell & Partners in 1958, becoming a partner within three years and chairman in 1968. He is best known for his work on Centre Point, a 34-storey tower completed in 1966 at the confluence of Tottenham Court Road, Oxford Street, and Charing Cross Road in central London. At the time, constructing tall buildings on London’s clay was widely considered too risky. Building on soil mechanics research by Professor Alec Skempton, Frischmann demonstrated that closely spaced, large-diameter concrete piles could support enormous loads without building settlement. The project also featured innovative techniques such as the use of high-strength precast concrete elements and a central core poured and jacked upward, allowing the building to rise at a rate of one floor per week.
Initial public reception of Centre Point was critical, with some condemning the building as a symbol of social inequality and architectural harshness. The property remained vacant for 15 years amid controversy over developer Harry Hyams’s tactics but eventually housed tenants and was granted Grade II listed status in 1995.
Beyond Centre Point, Frischmann collaborated extensively with architect Richard Seifert on some 50 tall buildings in London, including the NatWest Tower (now Tower 42), the first building in the UK exceeding 600 feet tall. He also engineered Seifert’s Drapers’ Gardens and influenced subsequent London office towers that reshaped the City’s skyline.
In 1968, following the partial collapse of the Ronan Point tower in east London after a gas explosion, Frischmann authored a Treasury report that introduced the term “progressive collapse” to describe how the failure of one structural element could precipitate widespread collapse. His recommendations led to crucial changes in building regulations in 1970, mandating stronger connections and alternative load paths in precast concrete panel construction to prevent such failures.
Frischmann expanded his engineering firm Pell Frischmann into a global consultancy with over 1,000 employees and projects ranging from transportation infrastructure to the containment of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site. His work extended internationally to structures such as the HSBC building in Shanghai and the Maybank Tower in Kuala Lumpur. Although he had professional disputes on some projects—most notably with architect Sir Norman Foster on HSBC—his commitment to engineering innovation remained resolute throughout his career.
A futurist in vision, Frischmann imagined vertical cities housing hundreds of thousands to address urban congestion, inspired partly by termite mounds he kept at home. He predicted dramatic advances in concrete technology enabling skyscrapers miles high, supporting compact living and purer air above city pollution.
Frischmann also pursued entrepreneurial ventures, including the acquisition and later sale of part of the government’s Property Services Agency, securing substantial profits, and a consortium bid for the Millennium Dome site that ultimately did not materialize.
He was married to Sylvia (née Elvey), a former Vogue model. They had two children: Richard, a corporate lawyer and former managing director of Pell Frischmann, and Justine, a former architecture student who gained fame as the lead singer of the band Elastica and now works as an artist.
Frischmann stepped down as chairman of Pell Frischmann in 2015, the same year the Centre Point building he had engineered was converted into luxury flats under his firm’s supervision. The structure's enduring integrity stood as a testament to his meticulous and visionary engineering.
Throughout his life, Frischmann was recognized as a determined and combative thinker, deeply shaped by his early experiences and driven by a fascination with technology and structural ingenuity. His legacy continues to influence the built environment in London and around the world.
