A recent Bain survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers found that about 25 percent of millennials and Gen Z individuals often prefer AI chatbots over traditional search engines, underscoring AI's growing influence in daily internet use. However, the rapid expansion of AI capabilities has necessitated substantial spending on infrastructure, computing power, and research. Leading companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are investing heavily to maintain technological leadership, while more affordable Chinese AI models are narrowing the performance gap.
Despite these efforts, the semiconductor industry has experienced a notable downturn, with the sector’s index falling over 20 percent in the past month. This decline has sparked debate over whether enthusiasm for AI investing might be moderating. Yet market fundamentals remain supportive: the global economy shows resilience, corporate earnings reports have started strong in the second quarter, and investor interest has broadened beyond traditional tech stocks to include cyclical sectors.
Looking ahead, experts highlight three critical factors that will shape AI’s investment trajectory. First, whether major technology companies—referred to as hyperscalers—can convert their vast AI-related capital expenditures into sustainable revenues and profitability. Second, if the intensifying global race for AI dominance will drive continued demand for semiconductors, compute power, and related infrastructure. Third, the extent to which government initiatives aimed at technological self-reliance will spur new investment flows into AI development.
Currently, the industry’s capital expenditures on AI-related infrastructure are projected to reach approximately US$900 billion in 2026, representing an 84 percent increase from the previous year, with expectations to grow further in 2027. However, by the end of 2026, spending on capital assets may surpass operating cash flow for some leading firms, raising concerns about a possible slowdown in investment beyond 2027 as companies reassess returns.
The competitive landscape of AI remains intense, particularly with China’s rapid advancements. Chinese organizations have introduced increasingly sophisticated open-weight language models, such as DeepSeek’s R1 and Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, the latter being the largest model of its kind globally. This progress has triggered discussions about regulatory controls and intellectual property protections, especially in the United States, where policymakers are considering measures that could restrict the broader adoption of Chinese AI technologies. For investors, the ongoing rivalry is viewed as likely to sustain high levels of capital investment despite short-term profitability challenges, as companies seek to avoid falling behind technologically.
Governments worldwide are also emerging as crucial players in the AI ecosystem. Initiatives aimed at securing domestic AI capabilities—from the European Union’s technology sovereignty plan to India’s Sarvan Platform and Canada’s efforts to reduce dependency on U.S. technology providers—indicate growing state involvement. These sovereign strategies already account for roughly one-third of global AI computing demand, suggesting a broadening customer base for AI infrastructure beyond traditional private-sector hyperscalers.
Given these dynamics, investment experts recommend that while the AI sector’s long-term growth potential remains intact, investors should prepare for heightened volatility and uncertainty. A diversified portfolio approach is advised, combining exposure to high-growth semiconductor capital equipment companies and foundries with more defensive technology assets such as payment networks, data center real estate trusts, and select consumer electronics firms. This strategy aims to capture AI-related upside while mitigating risks associated with potential capex reductions.
Though the AI investment cycle may face periods of adjustment, industry observers maintain that the fundamental shift toward agentic AI applications will continue to drive demand and innovation through at least the next several years. Investors are encouraged to remain vigilant to changing market conditions while positioning themselves to benefit from AI’s ongoing transformation of technology and commerce.
