Trainer William Haggas is optimistic about Division’s prospects as the three-year-old prepares to contest the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville this Sunday. Despite a series of near misses in major sprint races this summer, Haggas believes the Wathnan-owned colt is ready to secure his first top-level victory.

Division has consistently performed well against older rivals, most recently finishing fifth in the July Cup. He was also narrowly beaten by half a length when third in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on his prior start. Haggas noted that the colt’s position on the track may have affected his performance in the July Cup, where the leading horses were drawn on the opposite side. “He did well to finish where he did,” Haggas said, expressing hope for a more favorable draw at Deauville.

The colt’s preferred conditions and racing distance seem well suited to the upcoming event, and he remains one of the favorites. Division will face rivals including True Love and Wise Approach.

Meanwhile, Haggas indicated that no immediate decisions have been made regarding the next race for Maltese Cross, another horse in his care. Although entered in the Voltigeur Stakes at York, the trainer is still considering whether the horse’s target will be the St Leger or the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with a decision expected in the coming week.
