One of the United Kingdom’s earliest wind farms has been fully decommissioned with nearly all materials recycled or reused, marking a significant milestone in the country’s approach to sustainable energy infrastructure. Scottish Power reported that upon reviewing the dismantling of turbines at its Hagshaw Hill wind farm in Scotland, less than 0.1 percent of the waste was sent to landfill.

Hagshaw Hill, located in South Lanarkshire, was Scotland’s first commercial wind farm, beginning operations in 1995 with 26 turbines and a combined capacity of 15.6 megawatts. In 2023, the original turbines were removed and replaced with 14 more modern units capable of generating 80 megawatts—enough electricity to supply approximately 57,000 homes annually.

A key challenge in wind turbine recycling has been managing the fibreglass blades, which are more difficult to process than the steel components. Northern Ireland-based company Plaswire developed innovative methods to recycle these blades, which historically often ended up in landfill sites, particularly in the United States where large stockpiles have raised environmental concerns. The European wind sector has recently committed voluntarily to avoid sending turbine blades to landfills as part of broader sustainability efforts.

Andrew Billingsley, chief executive of Plaswire, indicated that the company is preparing to open a second recycling facility in Scotland to handle the anticipated increase in blade recycling demand as earlier wind farms reach decommissioning. He emphasized the need for substantial investment and rapid expansion to support this emerging industry, which is expected to create dozens of new jobs. Billingsley also noted that Plaswire’s revenue is projected to reach around £3 million this year through contracts to take blades from wind farms and the sale of recycled materials.

While the specific costs associated with recycling the Hagshaw Hill turbines have not been disclosed, they are believed to have been relatively high for this initial project. The industry is exploring “repowering” existing sites by replacing older turbines with larger, more efficient models, which in turn drives demand for effective recycling solutions.

As the UK and Europe continue to expand their renewable energy capacity, the ability to process and reuse materials from aging wind farms is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the sustainable energy transition. The success at Hagshaw Hill may serve as a model for future projects aimed at reducing the environmental impact of wind turbine decommissioning.
