The Wings Handball Championship commenced on Monday at the Oman Club’s indoor hall, bringing together four domestic clubs in a pre-season tournament designed to enhance preparations for the 2026-2027 handball season. Organized by Oman Club and supported by Wings Sports Company, the event is supervised by the Oman Handball Association and runs through October 31.

The competition features Oman Club, Khabourah, Nizwa, and Muscat, competing in a single round-robin format. The first day saw Oman Club face Nizwa at 6:15 p.m., followed by Khabourah playing Muscat at 8:15 p.m. Following the round-robin matches, the top two teams will advance to the final scheduled for October 31 to contest the championship title.

The tournament serves as an opportunity for coaching staff to assess player combinations, test tactical approaches, and gauge team fitness ahead of the official season. It is particularly significant for Oman Club, which has a busy schedule in November, including participation in the Super Cup starting November 8 and the 42nd Gulf Clubs Handball Championship in Bahrain from November 21 to 30.

At the Gulf Clubs Championship, Oman Club is drawn in Group B alongside Bahrain’s Al Ahli, Qatar’s Al Rayyan, and Kuwait’s Kuwait Club. Group A consists of Qatar’s Al Arabi, Bahrain’s Al Shabab, Saudi Arabia’s Al Mohit, and the UAE’s Sharjah. The domestic tournament is therefore viewed as a valuable preparatory platform for Oman Club ahead of regional competition, while other participating teams benefit from the chance to build match fitness and sharpen their competitive edge.

Samir bin Issa al Salimi, executive director of Wings Sports Company, highlighted the championship's role in advancing the development of handball in Oman through competitive standards, effective event management, and sustainable partnerships. He emphasized that the tournament helps teams improve their technical and physical readiness, provides coaches with opportunities to evaluate players and strategies, and raises the sport’s profile among spectators and media outlets.

Al Salimi also expressed Wings Sports Company’s intention to establish the championship as an annual event, with prospects of including clubs from outside Oman in future editions. Such expansion aims to enhance both the sporting quality and commercial potential of the tournament. Achieving this will require careful organizational and financial planning, securing sponsorships, and ensuring collaboration among all stakeholders.

Organizers hope the Wings Handball Championship will evolve beyond a pre-season preparation event to become a mainstay in Oman’s handball calendar, offering clubs a platform to compete, share experience, and strengthen readiness for upcoming seasons.
