Nearly three decades after the original film’s release, the long-anticipated sequel to the 1998 fantasy romantic comedy "Practical Magic" has arrived in theaters. The original movie, featuring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as two witch sisters navigating a centuries-old curse affecting their romantic relationships, developed a devoted cult following, prompting the production of a follow-up film.

In the new installment, the story picks up with Bullock’s character, Sally, now a widow who has abandoned her magical practices to shield her adult daughters, Kiley (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams), from the family curse that has historically endangered their male partners. Opposing this cautious stance is Sally’s sister Gilly, played once again by Kidman, who argues that relinquishing magic is pointless. The tension between the sisters intensifies when Kiley’s boyfriend falls into a coma shortly after professing his love, prompting Kiley to flee to England in search of a cure. Her journey leads her into dark occult situations beyond her capabilities, setting the stage for Sally and Gilly to reunite in an effort to save her and confront the lingering curse once more.

Despite the return of Bullock and Kidman and the appeal of their characters’ dynamic, the sequel struggles to recreate the charm and appeal of the original. Criticism has been directed at the script, which runs close to two hours and has been described as unwieldy and sluggish. Additionally, the new supporting cast has drawn mixed reactions, with some observers finding them less compelling than their predecessors.

While the film offers moments of nostalgia through the chemistry of its leads, it faces challenges in engaging audiences as effectively as its predecessor. "Practical Magic 2" is now available in general release.
