Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota delivered a strong performance in Sunday’s 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, allowing the team to maintain caution in the recovery timeline for injured starter Jayden Daniels. Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow a week earlier, and while his return remains the target when healthy, Mariota’s efficient outing helped alleviate pressure to rush the quarterback back.
Mariota completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns without turnovers, including a late fourth-quarter scramble that sealed the win at Northwest Stadium. The Seahawks defense entered the game allowing an average of only 17 points and 3.8 yards per play over their first two matchups, making Mariota’s performance particularly notable.
“Being ready and keeping the same mentality is important,” Mariota said Wednesday. “The transition is relatively easy.” He emphasized the significance of the win but cautioned against overrating the single-game effort. “This is a big-time stepping stone for us moving forward," he noted. "The more that we can learn from our mistakes, the more that we can build off of this.”
Mariota spread the ball effectively, connecting with 11 different receivers, with each of his three touchdown passes caught by different players. Wide receiver Treylon Burks praised the team’s depth and faith in each player’s ability. “Whoever’s name is called, we know we have full faith that they’re going to go out there and make the play," Burks said.
Wide receiver Terry McLaurin led the receiving corps with six receptions for 77 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Although McLaurin’s role had been more limited in the early season, he viewed Sunday’s game as a positive step. “I don’t really lose faith in myself, and neither do my teammates,” McLaurin said. “Being part of this team where they trust me to be a leader and a playmaker, I just wanted to put that on display.”
McLaurin also praised Mariota’s leadership and attitude, highlighting his consistent support of the team, even when in a backup role. “Marcus is an unbelievable person and human being," McLaurin said. "When he’s in there, we believe wholeheartedly he gives us a chance to win.”
Despite the offensive success, Washington’s defensive secondary faced challenges. The coaching staff adjusted their cornerback rotation, moving Mike Sainristil from starting outside cornerback to a nickelback role in favor of Rasul Douglas, who rotated with Fabian Moreau at outside corner. Douglas logged 43 snaps compared to Sainristil’s 25 and Moreau’s 19.
Cornerback Amik Robertson stood out by playing nearly every defensive snap and limiting opponents to just three receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown. He also registered four pass deflections, six tackles, and a forced fumble. Nonetheless, the secondary allowed Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold to throw for 379 yards and four touchdowns, despite intercepting him twice.
The Commanders, now 1-2, will travel to London on Tuesday as they prepare for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, who hold an identical record. The team’s cautious approach to Daniels’s return remains, supported by Mariota’s ability to manage the offense effectively in his absence.
