Christian Pulisic’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup ended in disappointment despite early promise and high expectations. The United States’ standout winger, who began the tournament with a dynamic performance, was unable to maintain that level through the knockout stages, culminating in a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16 on July 8 in Seattle.
Pulisic, 27, opened the tournament with a strong showing in the group stage, notably setting up a goal and helping orchestrate another in the 4-1 victory over Paraguay. However, a left calf injury sustained during that match sidelined him for the second half and the following group match against Australia. Although he returned to action later, including an appearance off the bench in a 3-2 loss to Turkey, his impact was uneven. His connection with teammates such as left back Antonee Robinson and striker Folarin Balogun appeared to falter, and he was unable to replicate the threatening presence he showed early on.
In the round of 16 against Belgium, Pulisic struggled to find rhythm and was substituted in the 59th minute due to a right leg injury after the U.S. trailed 2-0. His limited influence on the game was reflected in missed opportunities to receive the ball or break one-on-one, and the U.S. team collectively underperformed. Defensive errors and a goalkeeping mistake contributed to the lopsided result. Coach Mauricio Pochettino and players acknowledged the team's lack of cohesion on the day. Midfielder Tyler Adams questioned whether anyone had a major presence on the field, highlighting the team’s collective struggles.
Pulisic expressed frustration with his own performance and the team’s exit from the tournament, describing the experience as "disappointing" and regretful that he could not help the U.S. advance further. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic about the future. Having just turned 27, Pulisic is expected to represent the United States in upcoming friendlies and the Concacaf Nations League later this year, as well as potentially lead the team in future Gold Cup and Copa América tournaments.
Following the World Cup, Pulisic plans to take some time away from the game to recover and recharge before rejoining AC Milan for preseason preparations, starting July 25 in Scotland. He intends to spend time with family and unwind before returning to club and national team duties.
While Pulisic’s World Cup legacy remains a topic of debate, with comparisons drawn to American icons like Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey—who scored five and four World Cup goals respectively—Pulisic finished this tournament with a single World Cup goal. His inability to propel the U.S. beyond the consistent round-of-16 stage may temper some expectations, but his international career is far from over as he looks to build on the experience moving forward.
