After a destructive fire swept through the Altadena neighborhood of Los Angeles County in January 2025, singer-songwriter and producer Lorely Rodriguez, known professionally as Empress Of, found new inspiration for her latest album, "Dream House." The fire consumed many homes in the area, including Rodriguez’s childhood residence, prompting her family to confront the challenges of rebuilding.

Rodriguez, 36, permanently marked the significance of this event with a tattoo of the word “Altadena” on the inside of her left wrist, a tribute to her hometown’s resilience. In a recent interview, she expressed admiration for her mother, Reina, who took a determined lead in reconstructing their family home from the ground up. “She’s a very driven person. Once she puts her mind to something, it happens,” Rodriguez said.

The rebuilding process posed numerous obstacles, including concerns about obtaining permits, assessing soil safety following the fire, and envisioning how to transform the new structure into a true home. These experiences and uncertainties are central themes explored on "Dream House," which is set for release this Friday.

Musically, the album continues to embrace the electronic pop style that has defined Empress Of since her debut in 2015, known for its blend of vibrant, layered textures and buoyant melodies. However, Rodriguez describes the new work as more structured and conceptual than her previous projects, reflecting an evolution in her creative approach. “I feel I’ve done a lot, but I’ve never made a record like this,” she said.

Rodriguez’s connection to Altadena runs deep; she began making music there as a child, supported by her mother’s immigrant background from Honduras. The intersection of personal history and the aftermath of the fire has informed the emotional core of "Dream House," as Rodriguez contemplates themes of renewal, identity, and the meaning of home.
