Hailey Van Lith, a promising guard in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), has turned to New Zealand’s Tauihi Basketball League in pursuit of both physical recovery and mental rejuvenation following a challenging start to her professional career. The 25-year-old athlete joined the Tokomanawa Queens, hoping the new environment would offer a fresh perspective amid the demands of top-level basketball.
Van Lith’s journey has been closely watched since her high school days at Cashmere High School in Washington State, where she was recognized as one of the top recruits nationally. Her collegiate career spanned several programs, including Louisville, Louisiana State University, and Texas Christian University. Throughout her college tenure, she steadily built a reputation on the court, while also cultivating a considerable social media presence and securing endorsements, notably becoming one of the first 15 female college athletes signed by Adidas.
In addition to her collegiate achievements, Van Lith was part of the USA team that competed in 3x3 basketball at the 2024 Olympic Games, earning a bronze medal. These accomplishments helped establish her as a recognizable figure in women’s basketball when she entered the 2025 WNBA draft. Selected 11th overall by the Chicago Sky, expectations were high for Van Lith to make a significant impact.
However, her rookie WNBA season was hampered by ankle injuries, which sidelined her for the final seven games. She appeared in 29 games during the season but posted limited minutes and production. An off-season surgery on her right ankle signaled a necessary step towards recovery. Despite this, the Chicago Sky waived Van Lith shortly before the start of the 2026 season, as reports indicated her playing style did not align with the coaching staff’s vision for the team.
In a recent interview, Van Lith expressed hope that her time in New Zealand would serve as a restorative phase, both physically and mentally. She cited the opportunity to surround herself with supportive people and experience nature in a new setting as key factors. At the same time, she affirmed her confidence in her fitness and skills, including shooting, playmaking, and defense, as she prepared for the possibility of returning to WNBA training camps.
Van Lith’s move to New Zealand marks an unexpected but strategic chapter as she seeks to rebuild momentum in her professional basketball career following injury setbacks and team transitions.
