Tamika Catchings, the former WNBA star and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, has developed a unique approach to navigating life after professional sports by selecting a single guiding word each year to focus her goals and intentions. Now 47, Catchings—an NCAA champion with Tennessee, a WNBA MVP and champion with the Indiana Fever, and an Olympic gold medalist—has used this practice to transition from a highly regimented athletic career to a more flexible and purposeful post-retirement life.
During her decade-long basketball career, Catchings' schedule was structured and predictable, revolving around training, games, and team objectives. Upon retiring, she found the lack of routine challenging and struggled to maintain focus without the framework that professional sports provided. To address this, she began choosing one word annually to encapsulate her priorities and help streamline her life. Her word for 2026 is “intentional,” reflecting a desire to maximize her time and be purposeful in her relationships and endeavors.
Catchings described how the shift from player to professional in a new field required significant adjustment. Her initial role after retirement was director of player programs and franchise development for Pacers Sports & Entertainment. She recalls encountering unfamiliar tasks, such as managing expense reports and understanding workflow dynamics, which marked a stark contrast to the clear-cut demands of playing basketball. This transition, she said, necessitated a newfound patience and grace as she adapted to a different professional environment.
“I had to give myself grace,” Catchings noted, explaining how perfectionism shaped her approach to basketball but became a source of frustration during the learning curve in her new roles. She emphasized the importance of celebrating small victories and recognizing that growth can occur in unexpected ways and at different paces.
Her perspective on success has also evolved, particularly with the addition of a new chapter in her personal life. Since becoming a mother, Catchings has prioritized presence and balance, striving to be more deliberate with her time. She acknowledged that unlike her athlete days—dominated by relentless training and competition—she now makes conscious decisions about how to allocate her time and energy, often saying no to maintain focus on family.
Despite the changes, some attributes from her basketball career endure. Catchings cited discipline and time management as transferable skills that continue to guide her, especially as she balances motherhood, speaking engagements, and sports commentary. Her emphasis remains on making “the main thing the main thing,” with her family as the current priority.
Reflecting on her trajectory, Catchings stressed the value of openness during transitions. In the year following her retirement, she intentionally embraced new experiences, breaking free from past limitations imposed by her athlete contract and mindset. She encouraged others facing career shifts to remain flexible and receptive to varied opportunities, underscoring that growth often comes from stepping outside familiar boundaries.
Through her annual word practice and ongoing adjustments, Tamika Catchings exemplifies how athletes can successfully redefine purpose and professional identity beyond the court.
