Woking secured a 3-2 victory over Scunthorpe in a tightly contested League Two match at the Laithwaite Community Stadium on Saturday, maintaining their resilience despite significant challenges. The win added to the mounting pressure on Scunthorpe manager Andy Butler, whose side suffered their fifth defeat in six league games.

Woking’s early dominance was key to their success, with Aiden O’Brien opening the scoring in the seventh minute after capitalizing on a defensive error by Scunthorpe’s Dan Batty. The visitors extended their lead when captain John Marquis converted a penalty in the 25th minute, awarded following a foul on Nathan Paul-Lavaly by Scunthorpe skipper Will Evans. O’Brien then doubled Woking’s advantage early in the second half, finishing a well-constructed move initiated by a pass from Jaaskelainen.

However, the match shifted dramatically after that third goal. Woking’s Jaaskelainen appeared to injure his knee while celebrating and was stretchered off. Shortly after, defender Rico Browne was shown a red card for an off-the-ball incident involving Will Evans, reducing Woking to ten men. Scunthorpe responded aggressively in the remaining minutes.

Substitute goalkeeper Vicente Reyes made an immediate impact on his league debut by saving a penalty taken by Scunthorpe’s James Norwood. Nevertheless, Norwood quickly redeemed himself with a follow-up goal after Reyes failed to hold a long-range shot. Luke Brennan also scored late in the match from a free kick, narrowing the deficit and intensifying the contest. Despite this pressure, Woking maintained their composure to hold on for the victory.

Following the game, Andy Butler acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “I can totally understand the fans’ frustrations – in terms of the first-half performance, we were miles off it,” he said. “The goals we’re conceding right now are too easy. There are a lot of questions to be answered tomorrow. I look at myself all the time to make sure I’m doing as much as I can... The players have to take a little bit of responsibility and ownership of their own performances.” Butler declined to place blame solely on the squad, emphasizing his own accountability for the team’s results.

Scunthorpe’s struggles were evident as frustration among supporters culminated in boos at full-time. An intense confrontation took place between Evans and fans in the aftermath of the defeat.

The attendance for the fixture was 4,236. Scorers were O’Brien (7, 56), Marquis (25 penalty) for Woking, and Norwood (63), Brennan (84) for Scunthorpe.
