A woman in Greece has given birth at the age of 54 using an embryo that had been frozen for 22 years, just before reaching the country’s age limit for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. Cristina Rapti-Tzelepi and her husband decided to proceed with the procedure following the tragic death of their 21-year-old son in a road accident.
Facing a government-mandated age cut-off of 54 for women undergoing IVF, Rapti-Tzelepi said she had only a two-month window to complete the process. “It was stressful,” she explained, “but with inner strength and our doctor and his whole team by our side, we got through every obstacle.”
She gave birth on Wednesday to a daughter weighing 3.49 kilograms. The couple described the decision to use the long-frozen embryo as a way to give life a second chance and to continue their family’s story. “My wish for her is to grow up healthy and happy, full of joy like our first child, who filled our home with laughter,” Rapti-Tzelepi said.
The successful birth highlights the possibilities offered by advances in fertility preservation and assisted reproduction techniques, though it also underscores the challenges faced by individuals navigating legal and medical limitations linked to maternal age.
