A New Mexico woman has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man near Old Town Albuquerque last month. Latasha Hicks, 44, faces charges including conspiracy to commit murder, an open count of murder, and child abuse in relation to the April 9 incident.

Authorities say Hicks provided firearms to her sons, Xavier Torres, 22, and John Gonzales, 19, who were previously charged in the death of Gabriel Montaño. The shooting occurred outside Hicks’ residence in the 3200 block of Don Gabal NW, near Mountain and Gabalon streets.

Police responded to the scene around 8 p.m. and found Montaño had been shot. Torres and Gonzales were detained at the location and told officers they had shot Montaño in self-defense after he allegedly drew a gun on them. The investigation also revealed that Hicks left a pile of guns at the front door of the home prior to the deadly confrontation.

The child abuse charge stems from Hicks allowing three teenagers, including her two sons, to be in the immediate area during the incident. The case remains under investigation as authorities review the circumstances surrounding Montaño’s death and Hicks’ alleged role in arming those involved.
