A woman allegedly raped at the Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard in August was found walking naked along a roadway shortly after the incident, according to law enforcement officials and court records.
The woman, a visitor from Ireland, was seen just before 1 a.m. on August 16 walking on and off Temahigan Avenue near the barracks, local authorities said. She reportedly had visible bruising on her legs and a red mark around her neck. A passing driver noticed her and offered assistance, while a Massachusetts State Police trooper arrived on scene shortly afterward.
According to prosecutors, the woman “ran for her life” after the alleged assault, which occurred at the barracks in Edgartown. Edward J. Brown, 27, a safety employee for Boston Public Schools, was arraigned on a charge of rape related to the incident. Brown pleaded not guilty on October 13 in Edgartown District Court and is free on $10,000 bail. He is currently suspended from his job.
Prosecutors said Brown and the woman met earlier that evening of August 15 at the Ritz Café and later traveled together to the barracks in an Uber, arriving around 12:27 a.m. The woman was reportedly intoxicated, while Brown was sober. Investigators contend the woman woke up in an unfamiliar room at the barracks and that Brown held her by the neck and raped her while she struggled and screamed. When she asked for water, Brown briefly left the room, giving her a chance to flee. She then descended two flights of stairs and exited the building, shouting for help.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting the woman’s erratic behavior as she walked on Temahigan Avenue toward the nearby hospital. One caller expressed concern for her safety, noting that she was stepping in and out of the roadway. The driver who picked her up took her to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital’s emergency room, where police were waiting.
Following the woman’s arrival at the hospital, officers issued a description of a potential suspect: an overweight Black male wearing sunglasses and a hat, who was believed to have accompanied the victim. Police searched the surrounding area but did not locate anyone matching the description. Brown was reportedly inside the barracks at the time of the search.
Ryan T. Costello, a state trooper who was hosting Brown at the barracks, returned between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., according to prosecutors. The woman’s clothing and cell phone have not been recovered.
Two former girlfriends have accused Brown of harassment in unrelated matters, according to court records. The investigation remains ongoing.
