A 25-year-old woman was fatally shot during a birthday celebration at her home in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood late Saturday night, authorities said. The incident also left a 36-year-old man injured.
According to Chicago police, the victim, identified as Kayla Winfrey, was hosting a party with approximately 30 to 40 friends and family members at her residence in the 8000 block of South Morgan Street around 11:45 p.m. Police sources indicated that an altercation involving two groups of women escalated and spilled onto the front porch. During the conflict, one of the women involved reportedly called a suspected shooter who arrived in a silver sedan and opened fire, striking Winfrey and the male victim.
The 36-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition. Winfrey was shot multiple times and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Sunday. An autopsy conducted Monday confirmed her cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled it a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The suspected shooter, described by police as a 26-year-old resident of the Washington Heights neighborhood, fled the scene in the silver vehicle. No arrests have been reported, and the case remains under investigation.
In a separate yet potentially related incident occurring early Monday morning, Chicago police reported that a 41-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the Humboldt Park neighborhood around 2:30 a.m. She was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, but officials noted that the victim was unable to provide additional information about the shooting. Authorities have not indicated any confirmed connection between this incident and the earlier shooting in Auburn Gresham.
Neighbors described Winfrey and her family as close-knit and well-regarded in the community. Michelle Martin, who has lived near Winfrey for nearly six years, said she heard at least 10 gunshots on Saturday night, followed by paramedics administering CPR to Winfrey outside. “It’s very sad,” Martin said. “I hope they catch the person who did it.”
Martin expressed shock over the violence in the area, noting that while gun violence is a known issue, such an event so close to home is unsettling. She and her husband are considering relocating due to concerns about safety, though she acknowledges the difficulty in deciding where to go.
Police continue to investigate both shootings as part of ongoing efforts to address gun violence in Chicago’s affected neighborhoods. No further details have been released at this time.
