A 26-year-old woman died after two jet skis collided on the Harlem River late Saturday night, authorities said. The incident occurred just north of the RFK Bridge around 10 p.m., when one jet ski operated by a 26-year-old man, carrying the victim, was struck by another watercraft driven by 27-year-old Yeisson Reyes Rodriguez.
The victim, identified as Zielissa Vargas, was thrown unconscious into the water following the collision. Emergency responders from the Harbor Patrol performed CPR on Vargas at the scene before she was transported to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Vargas, a Bronx resident born in the Dominican Republic, was a mother to a one-year-old child and worked with children as a bus attendant for the Department of Education as well as at a day care center, according to family members.
Authorities said that prior to the crash, Vargas and a group of friends had spent the day drinking on Randall’s Island, where a Fish Fry music festival was taking place. The group had arrived there by jet ski around 11 a.m. and were returning to Fort Lee, New Jersey, when the crash happened. Reyes Rodriguez, who lives in Passaic, New Jersey, was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.141% in a breathalyzer test conducted less than two hours after the collision—well above the legal limit of 0.08%. He reportedly told investigators that he had consumed three drinks on Randall’s Island and said the crash occurred because he could not see well in the dark.
Reyes Rodriguez was taken into custody and charged with second-degree manslaughter and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $25,000 bail. Prosecutors noted that he has no criminal record in New York but has prior criminal contacts in New Jersey. Reyes Rodriguez immigrated from the Dominican Republic.
The victim’s family described Vargas as a vibrant and kind person who brought joy to those around her. Her brother, Uziel Vargas, said the family has not received condolences from the friends who were present during the incident. The funeral is scheduled to be held on Sunday at the International Funeral Service of New York on Amsterdam Avenue. Family members expressed the difficulty of not having seen Vargas’ body since her passing, leaving them without closure.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision as the community mourns the loss of the young mother.
