A 56-year-old entrepreneur from Tangkak has lost more than RM245,000 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme promoted on social media. The woman, who is involved in the palm oil business, encountered the scheme through an advertisement on TikTok on May 6.
According to Tangkak district police chief Supt Roslan Mohd Talib, the victim was enticed by promises of quick and substantial returns on her capital. Between July 1 and August 22, she made a total of 18 transactions across three separate bank accounts that are believed to have been used as mule accounts by the perpetrators. The total financial loss amounted to RM245,403.
Authorities have opened an investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which addresses cheating offenses. Police are continuing their efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the scam.
Supt Roslan urged the public to stay informed about the latest scam tactics by following updates from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department on social media. He also encouraged individuals who believe they have been targeted by similar schemes to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by dialing 997. Timely reporting can be crucial in preventing further financial losses by allowing authorities to act swiftly to freeze suspect accounts.
