A 68-year-old woman accidentally drove her vehicle into a Queens pizzeria on Wednesday afternoon, injuring herself and a customer, New York City police reported.
The incident occurred around 1:12 p.m. at New Park Pizza, located on Cross Bay Boulevard near 157th Avenue in the Howard Beach neighborhood. According to law enforcement, the woman was attempting to park her white BMW when she inadvertently accelerated, causing the car to crash front-first into the restaurant.
Inside the establishment at the time was a 73-year-old man who suffered chest pain and a knee laceration from the impact. Emergency responders transported him to Brookdale University Hospital, where his injuries were classified as minor. The woman sustained pain in her knee and neck and was also taken to the same hospital. Authorities indicated that she is expected to recover.
An employee at New Park Pizza, who identified himself as 22-year-old Joseph, described significant damage extending from the dining area to the bathroom. He noted that the restaurant, which typically serves hundreds of customers daily, would remain closed for an undetermined period.
Joseph added, “It could have been a lot worse,” and expressed hope that operations might resume by the weekend. The cause of the acceleration error remains under investigation.
