A woman from Mymensingh was sent to jail following a Facebook Live session in which she criticized the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government over repeated thefts affecting her business. Sathi Akter, who owns a beauty parlour in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh, expressed frustration during the live broadcasts on Sunday afternoon, linking her financial difficulties to her political support for the BNP.
Sathi, a local businesswoman with nearly 14 years of experience, reported suffering financial losses this year after multiple thefts, including the stealing of electrical wires from her shops. In her Facebook Live videos, posted from the account "Sathi Makeover," she voiced anger over the ongoing incidents and said, “I voted for the BNP government, and now I am the sufferer,” reflecting her dissatisfaction with the situation.
Following the circulation of the videos on social media, tensions escalated among BNP activists and supporters, leading to mobilization at the scene. Police intervened to restore order and took Sathi into custody. She was subsequently presented before a Mymensingh court and sent to jail under Section 151, which pertains to preventive detention to avert a breach of peace.
Authorities noted that, despite the arrest, her remarks did not constitute an anti-state statement, and no formal complaint had been filed against her as of the time of the court proceedings. The police presence was reportedly aimed at maintaining law and order amid the heightened local unrest triggered by the viral videos and related protests.
The situation highlights ongoing sensitivities around political criticism and public expressions of discontent in the region, especially when linked to local law enforcement and community responses.
