A woman was shot Thursday afternoon outside the headquarters of the Republican Party of Virginia (RPV) in Richmond in what officials described as a random incident. The shooting occurred around 1:45 p.m. in front of the party’s city offices.
According to a statement from RPV, all staff members were unharmed and there was no indication that the shooting was connected to the party’s operations. The incident reportedly unfolded quickly, with first responders arriving on the scene within minutes.
Surveillance footage reviewed by local media shows a woman kneeling on the sidewalk near the building following the shooting. In the video, a man gestures toward the building while another runs out of view. The man then takes out his cellphone and helps the woman inside the party offices. Someone off camera is heard urging, “He shot at her. Come on, come on, come on.”
RPV Chairman Jeff Ryer, who was not present during the incident but gathered information from staff, said employees from the Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit that often sets up a pop-up storefront nearby, assisted the woman. The organization typically engages with the lunchtime crowd around the area. Ryer said these individuals helped by bringing the woman indoors and applying pressure to her wound to slow the bleeding.
According to Ryer, the woman appeared to have sustained a shoulder injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The incident left RPV staff shaken, and many left work earlier than usual that day.
Requests for comment from Richmond police and Mayor Danny Avula’s office were not immediately returned. Authorities have not provided further details on the suspect or motive behind the shooting.
