A 36-year-old woman was found dead with a slashed throat inside her Brooklyn home on Saturday morning, police and family members said. The victim, identified as Maria Santos Flores, was discovered around 9:10 a.m. in the two-story building located near 85th Street and Fourth Avenue in the Bay Ridge neighborhood.

According to authorities, Santos Flores was found just inside the building’s entrance by her 18-year-old son. The teenager had gone to open the door for his aunt, who is the victim’s sister. Santos Flores’ husband, Santos Hernandez, 35, said his son saw her lying at the bottom of the stairs and immediately called for an ambulance.

Hernandez, who was at work in a warehouse at the time, learned of his wife’s death when his sister-in-law contacted him. He said police had not yet provided him with detailed information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“She had been married to me for three years,” Hernandez said. “I don’t know what happened, the police said they would tell me later because they are still gathering information.”

Santos Flores lived on the second floor of the building with her two children, the 18-year-old son and a 14-year-old daughter. The son remained too distressed to speak on Sunday, and no arrests have been reported as the investigation continues.

Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing the family as quiet and well-regarded in the community. A man named Luis, 32, reported hearing a single scream coming from the front of the building around 8 a.m. on Saturday.

“It was just one scream, about four or five seconds,” Luis said. “No more after that.” He described Santos Flores as a hardworking woman employed at a bar and characterized the family as “nice” and without apparent problems. “The husband is a good person. They take it easy,” Luis added.

Another resident, who declined to be named, described the tragedy as unusual for the neighborhood, emphasizing the family’s reputation as calm and friendly neighbors. “It’s really sad. I feel for them. It’s so hard. I can’t imagine what they’re going through,” the woman said.

The NYPD is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Maria Santos Flores’ death. Officials have not released information about any potential suspects or motives at this time.
