Malaysian track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang has commended the progress and perseverance of the national women’s team sprint squad following their performance at the 2026 Asian Games. While Azizulhasni secured a gold and a bronze medal at the Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, he emphasized the significant strides made by the women’s team, who captured a silver medal in the team sprint event.
The quartet, consisting of Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri, Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid, Anis Amira Rosidi, and Nurul Aliana Syafika Azizan, exceeded expectations by reaching the final for the first time and setting a new national record in the process. Their silver medal finish represented an improvement over the bronze medal earned by Izzah, Anis, and Aliana at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou three years earlier.
Azizulhasni highlighted their accomplishment as a testament to the cyclists’ dedication and hard work during preparations for the continent’s largest multi-sport event. In an Instagram post, he praised the women’s team for their strong performance against powerhouse nations such as China and Japan.
“I have personally witnessed the determination of the national women cyclists during training, including their willingness to step out of their comfort zones to elevate their performance,” Azizulhasni said. He acknowledged that some athletes overcame challenges such as injuries but noted that their humility remained a defining quality throughout their journey.
In addition to the team’s collective achievement, Azizulhasni singled out Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri for her resilience in clinching a bronze medal in the individual keirin event. He admired her ability to compete fiercely against physically larger and stronger riders, commending her fighting spirit and commitment up to the finish line.
Azizulhasni expressed hope that the athletes remain motivated and continue to learn from their experiences, emphasizing the potential he sees within the squad to achieve further success in international competition.
