Golfer Tiger Woods was released on bail late Friday, hours after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida. Officials stated Woods' Land Rover collided with a truck, subsequently rolling onto its side on a residential road near his home.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 PM. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek reported that Woods, traveling on a two-lane road with a 30 mph (48 kph) speed limit, attempted to pass a pressure cleaner truck. His vehicle swerved to prevent a direct collision but clipped the truck's rear trailer before overturning. Woods, who was uninjured, managed to crawl out of his vehicle.
Sheriff Budensiek indicated that Woods exhibited "signs of impairment" and appeared lethargic following the crash. While Woods agreed to a Breathalyzer test, which showed no presence of alcohol, he declined a request for a urine test. Investigators believe medication or other drugs may have contributed to his impaired state. Woods was subsequently arrested, with Florida law mandating at least eight hours in custody before bail could be posted. He was held separately from other inmates for his safety, according to the sheriff.
The arrest coincides with Woods, 50, working to return to professional golf after undergoing a seventh back surgery in September 2024. He last participated in an official tournament at the British Open in 2024. Earlier this month, in March 2025, he ruptured his Achilles tendon, an injury that had already sidelined him for the current season even before his back surgery. Despite these physical challenges, Woods had competed in an indoor golf league on Tuesday night and was contemplating his participation in the Masters, which commences on April 9. Additionally, he was scheduled to unveil a golf course project with Masters chairman Fred Ridley on April 5 and faced an imminent deadline to decide on the captaincy for the 2027 US Ryder Cup team in Ireland.
This marks the fourth car accident involving Woods. Previous incidents include a 2009 crash in Orlando, a 2017 DUI arrest in South Florida where he pleaded guilty to reckless driving after being found asleep behind the wheel with the engine running, and a high-speed rollover crash in Los Angeles in February 2021 that resulted in severe leg and ankle injuries. No charges were filed in the 2021 incident. Woods' manager at Excel Sports did not immediately respond to requests for comment. US President Donald Trump, speaking from Miami, expressed concern for Woods, describing him as a "very close friend" facing "some difficulty."
