Bethan Rees, a 24-year-old consultant at Deloitte, credits her early work experience with shaping her career in professional services. Originally from Somerset, Rees gained practical insights through various placements, including roles at a holiday park and a post office, before joining Deloitte’s summer vacation scheme.
During the programme, Rees said she received a comprehensive introduction to the industry, gaining hands-on experience while exploring different career options within the firm. She noted that from the outset, she was encouraged to take responsibility for her tasks and actively contribute to her team’s efforts, which helped her quickly build strong working relationships.
Rees also highlighted the value of interacting with senior partners early in the scheme. These meetings provided her with direct access to experienced professionals whose guidance and feedback informed her understanding of the business and supported her professional development.
Now a member of Deloitte’s UK Tax & Legal division, Rees’s journey underscores the importance of structured work experience opportunities in preparing young professionals for long-term careers in competitive sectors. Such schemes aim to bridge the gap between academic study and employment by offering practical exposure and fostering early mentorship.
