Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio has signed a two-year contract with Welsh club Swansea City, with an option to extend for an additional season, the Championship side announced Thursday. The 29-year-old joins Swansea following a standout performance at the recent World Cup, where he played a key role in helping Canada advance to the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

Eustáquio, who starred for Portugal’s top club Porto before his move, cited the opportunity to reunite with Swansea’s head coach, Vitor Matos—formerly of Porto—as a significant factor in his decision. “It was almost a no-brainer for me,” Eustáquio said in a club statement. “I know what I’m going to get here, so I’m very happy that I made this decision.”

Swansea finished 11th in the English Football League Championship last season, well outside the playoff positions for promotion to the Premier League. Eustáquio acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism about the club’s prospects. “The dream of being part of a big club looking to get back to the top league was the big attraction for me,” he said. “Obviously, it’s going to be very hard, but at the same time, if you think game by game, it’s very possible to create a special atmosphere here in the stadium, and it might be a special season. Who knows?”

Born in Leamington, Ontario, to Portuguese parents, Eustáquio moved to Portugal during his childhood. Prior to his tenure at Porto, where he made more than 150 appearances over four and a half years, he played for Portuguese side Chaves and Mexico’s Cruz Azul. Earlier in 2026, Eustáquio spent a four-month loan spell at Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC.

On the international stage, Eustáquio has earned 61 caps for Canada and has represented the country in the last two World Cups. This summer, he scored a stoppage-time winner in Canada’s 1-0 victory over South Africa in the round of 32. He also captained the team in several matches while Alphonso Davies was sidelined with a hamstring injury. Canada’s run ended following a loss to Morocco.

“This summer was amazing,” Eustáquio reflected. “For us as a country it was a dream come true to go so far in such an amazing tournament. The fact that we broke some records was amazing, and the fact that I was able to help the team with that goal against South Africa was a really big moment of happiness.”

Eustáquio is expected to don the No. 46 jersey for Swansea and could debut as early as this weekend against Derby County.
