FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks during World Cup matches, emphasizing that the measure is motivated solely by player welfare and sporting fairness rather than commercial interests. The three-minute pauses, implemented at the 22nd and 67th minute of every game, have generated controversy since the tournament’s opening round, drawing criticism from various players, coaches, and fans.
The hydration breaks were introduced primarily to help players manage the effects of high temperatures across North America, where the World Cup is being held. While these stoppages have created opportunities for broadcasters to insert additional advertising, Infantino asserted that FIFA does not receive extra revenue from these breaks, as all commercial agreements were finalized well in advance. “This is not a financial issue for us. For us, it is purely a sporting matter,” he stated on Wednesday.
The interruptions have sparked debate over their impact on game flow and competitive integrity. Coaches such as England’s Thomas Tuchel and Uruguay’s Marcelo Bielsa have expressed concerns that the breaks disrupt match momentum and alter the sport’s traditional character. Tuchel remarked that the additional pause “interrupts and changes the identity of the football match,” while Bielsa argued that breaking games into shorter segments detracts from football’s fundamental nature.
Some figures, including Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk, have supported the rationale behind hydration breaks in extreme heat but questioned their necessity in cooler conditions or covered venues. Infantino acknowledged this point but stressed the importance of consistency, noting that the tournament spans 39 days with teams potentially playing up to eight matches during that period. “Having a moment to rest is extremely important,” he said.
Infantino further emphasized the principle of equal conditions for all teams, explaining that it would be unfair for coaches to gain an advantage in hotter matches by making tactical adjustments during breaks that are not afforded in cooler games. He also noted that the introduction of hydration pauses has not diminished the intensity of play, with athletes maintaining high performance levels throughout matches.
