The global community must reject politicization and culture wars surrounding climate change to avoid severe economic and social consequences, the United Nations’ top climate official warned. Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), spoke before a European Parliament committee on Wednesday, emphasizing the urgent and widespread impacts of rising global temperatures.
Stiell highlighted the devastating effects of this summer’s extreme heat across Europe, where tens of thousands of deaths have been attributed to the record temperatures. The heatwave, described as “hot as hell,” also inflicted significant damage on infrastructure, disrupted businesses, and strained economies, with preliminary cost estimates nearing £180 billion ($191 billion). The crisis has driven forced migration in various regions as people flee areas increasingly affected by extreme weather events.
“The climate crisis is now a continent-wide economic security emergency,” Stiell said. He pointed to widespread evacuations, power station shutdowns, clogged trade routes, agricultural losses, declining crop yields, and rising food prices as indicators of a deteriorating situation likely to worsen. Stiell cautioned against framing climate change as a partisan issue, noting that it transcends political divisions by affecting family health, community safety, economic stability, and essential resources such as water and food.
Stiell also challenged skepticism from populist parties in the European Union and beyond who have called for relaxing greenhouse gas emissions targets. Countering claims that climate policies contribute to inflation and economic hardship, he said, “To be soft on climate action is to be soft on inflation, and the cost of living, soft on sovereignty and security, and soft on economic growth and jobs.” He further noted that the ongoing fossil fuel crisis is raising government borrowing costs, limiting fiscal capacity to provide necessary public services.
These remarks coincided with the release of data from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service showing August 2026 tied as the hottest month ever recorded globally, with average temperatures 1.65°C above preindustrial levels. July 2023 also shared this record, and sea surface temperatures reached unprecedented highs. Scientists warned these records were set prior to the full impact of the anticipated El Niño weather pattern, which could drive temperatures even higher.
The 1.5°C threshold, established by the 2015 Paris Agreement as a critical limit to avoid dangerous climate tipping points, is rapidly being approached. Failure to contain emissions raises the risk of irreversible damage to stabilizing elements of the Earth’s climate system, including the Arctic ice cap and the Amazon rainforest.
Environmental experts stressed the gravity of the situation. Ruth Fuller, chief climate adviser at WWF UK, pointed to the increasing likelihood of surpassing natural tipping points that would permanently alter ecosystems. Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which manages the Copernicus service, described August 2026 as “a remarkable month in the global climate record,” noting that rising temperatures in the atmosphere and oceans are already producing significant impacts on communities, economies, and ecosystems worldwide.
A recent study released earlier this year supports this outlook, warning that even under optimistic scenarios, ongoing emissions reductions will only partially limit warming caused by natural landscape emissions. Under best-case scenarios, these natural sources could add 0.2°C of warming by mid-century, while under worse conditions, the increase could reach 0.4°C.
Current national policies are projected to raise global temperatures approximately 2.6°C above preindustrial levels by the end of the century, according to the Climate Action Tracker. Such an outcome is expected to cause widespread disruption, including sea-level rise and substantial agricultural losses, severely impacting billions of people globally.
