Marking a century since the first Pilates studio opened in Manhattan, a new location is set to become the world’s largest dedicated Pilates facility in the city’s Flatiron district. Reforming Pilates Townhouse is scheduled to open on June 1 at 109 W. 17th St., occupying a nearly 7,000-square-foot, three-story former carriage house built in 1920.
The founder of Reforming Pilates, Genevieve Ross, 34, said the opportunity to lease the space came as a surprise, recalling how her husband secured the location without her prior knowledge. “There is nothing like it,” Ross said of the space after her husband signed the lease. At the time, Ross had just given birth and had not yet seen the property.
The new Flatiron studio, which will be the company’s second New York site after its Upper East Side location, will feature multiple areas designed to accommodate a wide range of Pilates workouts. The facility includes two separate equipment rooms, each capped at 10 reformers, as well as an infrared-heated mat Pilates room and a private class area.
Reforming Pilates was founded in Miami in 2021 and has since grown to nine studios nationwide, not counting the upcoming townhouse location. The Flatiron studio’s expansive layout and specialized rooms aim to offer clients a versatile and upscale Pilates experience.
The upcoming opening coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first Pilates studio in Manhattan, originally established by Joseph and Clara Pilates in 1926 at 939 Eighth Ave. This new townhouse studio represents a significant expansion in the practice’s footprint in the city, reinforcing Reforming Pilates’s commitment to growing its presence in the New York market.
