Chelsea advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 6-3 victory over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, extending their tally to 16 goals in five matches under manager Xabi Alonso. After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Blues staged a dramatic comeback following a series of halftime substitutions that shifted the momentum of the game.
Cole Palmer, who played a central role in turning the tie around, converted a penalty early in the second half to begin Chelsea’s charge back into the match. He scored twice more as part of a six-minute burst that saw Chelsea score three consecutive goals, overturning the deficit to lead 3-2. Other second-half goals included strikes from Pedro Neto, Danny Welbeck, and a debut goal from Argentine midfielder Valentin Barco.
Chelsea’s starting lineup featured nine changes from their previous Premier League match against Arsenal, a decision that appeared to highlight concerns about squad depth as the visitors capitalized to take an early two-goal lead. However, with the introduction of Reece James, Morgan Rogers, Neto and Palmer at halftime, the team increased its intensity and quality of play significantly.
Palmer noted the transformation after the break, saying the manager urged the squad to raise their energy and come alive following a lackluster first half. “Everyone agreed in the changing room, so we stepped up,” Palmer said, reflecting on what was asked of the team. He added that he and fellow attackers Morgan Rogers and Joao were enjoying their roles under Alonso's guidance.
Leeds briefly revived hopes of an upset when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored to make it 4-3 late in the game, but Welbeck’s headed goal in stoppage time sealed the win for Chelsea. Welbeck finished with a hat-trick, marking his third goal since joining the club.
Chelsea now turn their focus to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Hull City at home on Saturday. Palmer emphasized the importance of continuing to build on recent results and performances as the team seeks to maintain momentum in multiple competitions.
