Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been issued a suspended fine of £136,265 after admitting to possessing a falsified Covid-19 vaccination certificate. The 34-year-old midfielder acknowledged the offence, which occurred in 2022 while he was playing for Arsenal, during a period when the UK and several other countries required proof of vaccination or a negative test for entry.
Xhaka was absent from Switzerland’s recent Nations League matches due to an ongoing investigation by the Swiss public prosecutor’s office. The case emerged amid allegations that a doctor in Lucerne may have issued fraudulent vaccination certificates without administering the vaccines, though the doctor has denied these claims. Despite the seriousness of the offence, Xhaka avoided jail time and accepted responsibility for his actions, describing the offence as a "mistake" influenced by concerns over vaccination.
On social media, Xhaka expressed gratitude for the support he received during the investigation, stating that he stands by his acceptance of responsibility. He is expected to rejoin the Switzerland national team in November and to resume his role as captain. Meanwhile, Sunderland is preparing to face Brighton, with team injuries sidelining players Dan Ballard and Brian Brobbey.
The incident has highlighted ongoing issues related to Covid-19 protocols and compliance during the pandemic, with Xhaka’s case drawing attention due to his high profile in international football. Both legal and sporting authorities have treated the matter seriously, emphasizing the importance of integrity in public health measures.
