Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with Cambodia to promote regional stability and enhance cooperation in security and economic development. Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Cambodian People's Party President and Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who is currently on a three-day official goodwill visit to China.

Xi expressed China's readiness to establish a security partnership with Cambodia and collaborate closely to address the persistent issue of telecom fraud, which both leaders identified as a significant challenge. The Chinese president praised Cambodia's ongoing efforts to combat telecom and online fraud, while Hun Sen confirmed that tackling this problem remains a top priority for his government. He also affirmed Cambodia’s willingness to deepen law enforcement cooperation with China to effectively crack down on these crimes.

The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two nations, including Xi’s state visit to Cambodia in April 2025, which marked a renewed commitment to building an “all-weather” China-Cambodia community with a shared future. Against the backdrop of evolving international and regional dynamics, Xi urged both countries to work together to uphold a stable path and contribute positively to peace and development across Southeast Asia.

Xi highlighted the need to reinforce strategic mutual trust by drawing on historical ties and elevating bilateral relations to new levels. He indicated that China aims to intensify interparty dialogue and share governance experiences to improve the administrative capabilities of both parties.

Economic collaboration also featured prominently in the discussions, with Xi underscoring the importance of advancing projects such as the Industrial Development Corridor and the Fish and Rice Corridor. These initiatives aim to transform Cambodia’s coastal city of Sihanoukville into a multifaceted special economic zone and to promote modern ecological agriculture near Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. Xi also noted the potential of the China-Cambodia Free Trade Agreement to boost practical cooperation and improve the livelihoods of people in both countries.

The Chinese leader concluded by calling for a model of strategic coordination between China and Cambodia, reiterating China’s commitment to fostering neighborly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation to maintain regional stability.
