Starting pitcher Carlos Rodón delivered a strong performance, striking out eight batters over 6 1/3 innings while allowing two runs. Despite Rodón’s solid outing, two of the Yankees’ key relievers, Paul Blackburn and Brent Headrick, encountered difficulties in the middle innings. Blackburn struggled in the seventh inning, loading the bases and allowing runs before Headrick entered to help navigate out of trouble. Headrick faced more pressure in the eighth, loading the bases again after a 10-pitch walk by Mets’ Carson Bengg. However, the Yankees’ bullpen stabilized, with Headrick escaping a jam thanks in part to a crucial line-drive catch off the bat of Mets’ Francisco Lindor, which was briefly delayed by a fan carrying a Palestine flag who ran onto the field. Ryan Bednar then closed the eighth by inducing flyouts, including a sacrifice fly by Marcus Semien that cut the Yankees’ lead to 5-3.
The Mets struck back in the ninth when A.J. Ewing launched a leadoff home run off Bednar. Nonetheless, Bednar ultimately secured the win, finishing the game by inducing a double play from former Yankee Juan Soto, who was met with persistent booing from the home crowd throughout the contest.
Offensively, the Yankees were aggressive from the opening inning against Mets starter David McLean, tagging him for 10 hits—marking a career high for the right-hander—in five innings. The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the first but managed just one run on an RBI single by Spencer Jones. The Mets responded in the second inning, capitalizing on a misplay by Jones to tie the game 1-1. However, the Yankees regained and held the lead for good later in the second with a rally sparked by Anthony Volpe, who was making just his second appearance back from Triple-A. Volpe singled with one out, followed by another single by Josh Rice. The rally culminated in a significant three-run homer by Cody Bellinger, which came after a contentious umpire call that denied him a walk.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone described Bellinger’s home run as a key moment that gave the team momentum, adding that although the Mets stayed competitive, the Yankees ultimately were able to withstand their challenge. The victory brings the Yankees closer to clinching their playoff spot as they continue their push toward the postseason.
