The New York Yankees erupted for 13 runs in the third inning to secure a 13-8 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, marking the most runs scored in a single inning for the visiting Yankees in 21 years. The offensive outburst took place at Oakland, with Cohasset native Ben Rice playing a key role, driving in four runs with a two-run double and a two-run triple during the frame.

The Yankees sent 18 batters to the plate in the 43-minute inning, compiling 11 hits, four walks, and four stolen bases. Remarkably, the first 12 hitters reached base safely against Athletics pitchers Jacob Lopez and Michael Kelly, a feat New York had not accomplished on the road in nearly 77 years. Eight of the nine batters recorded at least one hit and an RBI in the inning, with Austin Wells the exception, drawing two walks and crossing the plate twice.

This 13-run inning was New York’s most productive since scoring the same number in the eighth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays on June 21, 2005, and stood just one run shy of the franchise record set in 1920 against the Washington Senators. Oakland’s pitching staff allowed the most runs in an inning since June 18, 1950, when they conceded 14 runs to Cleveland in the first inning of a doubleheader.

Starting pitcher Will Warren, who improved to 7-1, settled in after a rocky start that saw the Athletics score three unearned runs in the first inning. Warren then pitched five consecutive scoreless innings to secure the win, helping New York finish the road trip with a 5-1 record.

Despite the large offensive margin, the Athletics responded with four runs off Yankees reliever Tim Hill in the seventh inning. Brent Rooker hit a solo home run, followed by Jonah Heim’s three-run shot, narrowing the deficit but ultimately falling short.

The Athletics have struggled defensively during their recent homestand, allowing 47 runs over five games. Their slump began with a three-game sweep by the Seattle Mariners.
