BOSTON — The New York Yankees suffered a 6-1 defeat to the Boston Red Sox on Friday, with left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle limiting their offense and prompting a rare day off for star slugger Ben Rice. Rice, sidelined for the first time since May 7, missed the lineup as part of a strategic rest following a five-at-bat, hitless performance against lefties on Thursday.

Manager Aaron Boone explained that Rice had been “grinding” through a challenging stretch facing left-handed pitchers, and the decision to rest him aimed to create opportunities for other players in the lineup. Rice did enter the game as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning but grounded out.

Friday’s contest marked the eighth time in the past 12 games that the Yankees faced a left-handed pitcher, with Rice batting just 2-for-18 over the last four games against southpaws—a departure from his otherwise strong season. Prior to Friday, Rice maintained a robust .956 OPS, ranking sixth among all qualified hitters.

The Yankees’ offensive struggles came amid ongoing injury issues for key players Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, who both were present at Fenway Park on Thursday but remain sidelined. Judge is approaching the four-week mark since being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his first right rib. The team initially projected a 4-6 week recovery window and currently has no plans for reevaluation in the coming week.

Stanton has recently begun light activity after a calf injury suffered earlier this month during base running caused a setback just days before a potential return.

In other roster moves, catcher Ali Sánchez was activated from the paternity list Friday and started against Tolle. Sánchez, a right-handed hitter, went 0-for-2 before being replaced by pinch hitter Austin Wells in the eighth inning. Sánchez has shown promise in limited appearances, entering the game with a .316 batting average, an .802 OPS, and three RBIs over 21 plate appearances.

The Yankees now turn their focus to addressing offensive inconsistency and managing player health as they continue their series at Fenway Park.
