More than 11,000 young participants in Queensland are set to begin the Surf Life Saving Queensland Nippers season this weekend. Running from October through March, the program aims to equip children with essential skills to stay safe in and around water.
The Nippers initiative focuses on fostering confidence among young Queenslanders by helping them understand ocean conditions and learn how to navigate them safely. Matt Thompson, General Manager of Public Safety, emphasized the program’s broader community role, noting that it encourages children and their families to come together, build friendships, and engage with their local surf clubs.
In addition to promoting water safety, the Nippers program lays the foundation for a pathway into surf lifesaving. Starting at age 13, participants can begin working toward earning their surf rescue certificates, which qualify them for lifesaving roles.
The season's operations rely heavily on the support of thousands of volunteers, including water safety personnel, officials, and parents, who play integral roles in ensuring the program's success and safety standards.
