Dean Young has announced key appointments to his coaching staff as he aims to improve the St George-Illawarra Dragons’ performance and guide them towards a finals appearance. Former Dragons premiership player Nathan Fien and veteran Sharks pathways coach Dave Howlett will take on significant roles within the team’s setup for the upcoming season.
Fien, who was part of the Dragons' 2010 premiership-winning side alongside Young, has left his assistant coaching role at the Dolphins to become Young’s right-hand man. Since joining the Dolphins in their inaugural 2023 season, Fien contributed to their attacking strategy, helping the team secure a top-four finish in 2026. His appointment is seen as pivotal in refining the Dragons’ attack, particularly given the extensive changes planned for the team’s spine during the off-season.
The Dragons’ new spine for 2027 will feature fullback Scott Drinkwater, halves Kodi Nikorima and Luke Metcalf, and hooker Jacob Liddle. Fien, a former half and hooker himself, is expected to play a central role in integrating these players to form a cohesive and effective combination. His familiarity with the Dragons' development pathways, having coached Collegians in 2015 after retiring from the NRL in 2013, adds further value to his role.
Dave Howlett’s appointment has garnered attention due to his long tenure as head of Endeavour Sports High’s rugby league program and his extensive experience within the Sharks pathways system, where he has worked for nearly two decades. Known for his strong communication skills and coaching acumen, Howlett will bring maturity and respected insight to Young’s coaching team, providing a steadying influence.
In addition to these appointments, Willie Talau has been named head coach of the Dragons’ NSW Cup side, while Tom Eisenhuth will lead the Steelers SG Ball team. These staffing decisions reflect Young’s broader strategy to strengthen the club’s coaching foundation across multiple levels as the Dragons look to improve their competitive standing in the 2027 season.
