Newcastle United midfielder Sean Steur has expressed satisfaction with his recent move to the English Premier League club, following his transfer from Ajax this summer. The 18-year-old joined the Magpies for a reported fee of £19.6 million and has quickly integrated into the squad, featuring in every match so far this season.

Steur, who faced criticism for making a premature move to the Premier League, has demonstrated his potential since arriving at St James’ Park. He notably impressed during Newcastle's recent victory over Hull City, earning praise for his performances in pre-season and competitive fixtures. The young Dutch midfielder had reportedly been close to signing a new contract with Ajax before changing course and opting for a fresh challenge in England.

In remarks to ESPN NL, Steur reflected on his decision to leave Ajax, citing uncertainty about his future role at the Dutch club amid organizational changes. “There was a lot of change there and I sometimes had doubts about what my role would be,” he said. Ultimately, he said he followed his instincts and feels content with the move. “So far, I just think I’ve made a very good [decision].”

Steur acknowledged the increased intensity and quality of the Premier League, describing it as a steep learning curve that has already contributed to his development. “I learn a lot from that. And, of course, you train and play at a high level. It’s only for the better for you,” he stated.

He also spoke positively about life in the North East of England, emphasizing his comfort living in Newcastle and his appreciation for the local football culture. “I’m very happy with it, fortunately. I’m very much in my place there. How football is experienced there is of course next level,” Steur commented.

Newcastle’s recruitment team, led in part by Ross Wilson, targeted Steur as part of the club’s evolving strategy to build a youthful and dynamic squad. Although early in his professional career at the Premier League level, Steur’s performances suggest he has significant potential to contribute to the club’s ambitions moving forward.
