Hong Kong apprentice jockey Nichola Yuen Hang-yiu has made a striking start to the 2026-27 racing season, raising the possibility that she could challenge a longstanding record for most wins in a single season by an apprentice.

Currently eight meetings and 78 races into the campaign, the 26-year-old Yuen has secured eight victories from 45 rides, resulting in an 18 percent strike rate. This places her second in the jockey standings, behind only Zac Purton, who maintains a 20 percent strike rate. Yuen’s early success contrasts sharply with the beginning of Jerry Chau Chun-lok’s career. Chau, who holds the record for the most wins by an apprentice with 58 during the 2020-21 season, had only three wins from 40 rides at a comparable stage.

Chau’s 58-win season surpassed the previous record of 43 wins set by Matthew Chadwick in 2008-09, a mark thought to be difficult to surpass. Although Chau narrowly missed out on the Tony Cruz Award for top local rider in his debut season, losing out to Vincent Ho Chak-yiu by three wins, his record remains formidable. However, Yuen’s early form has sparked speculation about whether she can maintain momentum and threaten that record.

Both riders followed similar career paths, making their Hong Kong debuts in the spring—Yuen in April this year and Chau in May during his first full season. Chau accumulated seven wins from 95 rides early on, while Yuen has achieved 44 wins from 108 rides over a similar period, illustrating her faster progression. Yuen has already lost her 10-pound apprentice claim due to her successes, which may pose a challenge going forward, although she could benefit from increased opportunities from her mentor, trainer Ricky Yiu Po-on.

So far this season, Yuen’s winners have primarily come under the guidance of two trainers. Pierre Ng Pang-chi has saddled her for five of her eight victories, while Ricky Yiu’s stable accounts for two. Yuen has ridden 17 times for Yiu compared with 11 rides for Ng. It is anticipated that Yiu may seek to leverage her remaining apprentice weight allowance more strategically before it diminishes further with additional wins.

Industry observers note that greater support from Yiu and interest from other trainers could bolster Yuen’s chances of sustaining her current form. While some analysts consider it unlikely she will surpass Chau’s record, her rapid start ensures her progress will be closely monitored as the season continues.
