Esteban Lepaul experienced a significant milestone during his first training session with the French national football team, receiving passes from head coach Zinedine Zidane. The 26-year-old striker was called up to the squad last week ahead of France’s upcoming Nations League matches, marking a notable achievement following a period of persistence and gradual progression through the ranks of French football.

Lepaul’s journey to the national team was far from straightforward. Released by the Lyon academy several years ago, he spent multiple seasons competing in the lower divisions before joining Rennes from Angers in 2025. His performances improved considerably, culminating in an impressive 2025-2026 season during which he finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer with 21 goals.

Speaking at France’s training camp, Lepaul described the experience of practicing under Zidane’s guidance as almost surreal. "What better way to practice finishing than to receive a few balls from Zinedine Zidane," he said, calling the moment a "dream come true."

Zidane, who recently took over as the French national team coach, acknowledged the significance of Lepaul’s late rise. He highlighted that many players reach top levels after starting in lower-tier leagues, offering encouragement to others currently playing outside the spotlight. "That must give a lot of encouragement to those currently playing in the lower divisions, who dream of making it all the way to the top and reaching the highest level," Zidane said.

Lepaul also reflected on the role his late father, Fabrice, who was a professional footballer, played in his career. He expressed confidence in his ability to secure a place on the national team after last season’s scoring achievements. "I told myself that finishing as the top scorer in one of the five major leagues wasn’t something everyone gets to do, and that it was no small achievement either," he said. "So I thought, why not knock on the door of the national team?"
