Airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday resulted in the deaths of eight people, including a child, according to local emergency services and hospitals. Three fatalities occurred in an airstrike targeting Gaza City, while five police officers were killed in a separate strike in western Khan Yunis, located in the southern part of the enclave.
The interior ministry of Gaza reported that the strikes targeted on-duty police officers in Khan Yunis, and local hospitals confirmed they received the bodies along with multiple wounded individuals. The attacks are part of ongoing Israeli military operations in the region.
Israel currently controls approximately two-thirds of the Gaza Strip, with residents being ordered to evacuate these areas. Nearly all of Gaza’s population of over two million people now live in the remaining one-third of the territory. This area, still under the de facto control of Hamas, is heavily damaged, with many displaced persons residing in temporary shelters and buildings damaged by prior fighting.
Since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was established last year, at least 1,500 Palestinians have been reported killed in Israeli strikes within Gaza. The ongoing assault launched by Israel in October 2023 has resulted in more than 74,000 Palestinian casualties, according to available figures.
