Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday, defeating Italy’s Luciano Darderi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). The top-seeded German secured the victory during the evening session in New York, closing out the match just before midnight.

The 29-year-old Zverev, the 2020 finalist, appeared determined to move past a slow start to his tournament. After enduring two grueling five-set matches and three consecutive night sessions, he quickly settled into rhythm. He dominated the opening set despite some late pressure on his serve and capitalized on Darderi’s errors, including a crucial misplayed drop shot that allowed him to break serve and assert a 4-0 lead in the second set.

Darderi, seeded 21st, responded with a strong showing in the third set, utilizing powerful serves and well-timed drop shots to challenge Zverev. However, the German regrouped to close out the set in a tiebreak and secure his place among the last eight competitors.

With this win, Zverev became the only male player to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slam tournaments this year, marking a significant milestone as he looks to improve on his past performances at the US Open.

“I thought that my level was consistent, but he started incredibly well in the third set,” Zverev commented after the match. “I barely saw anyone hit so hard so consistently. He made it very difficult for me. I’m happy to be in the quarter-finals and playing this way.”

Zverev will next face Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals. This marks Zverev’s fifth quarter-final appearance at the US Open, underscoring his continued presence among the tournament’s top contenders.
