Alexander Zverev is set to conclude 2026 as the world’s No. 1 male tennis player, following Carlos Alcaraz’s third-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters on October 12. The German’s rise to the top marks the first time he will finish a season as the highest-ranked male player, capping a breakthrough year highlighted by victories at the French Open and the US Open.

Zverev, currently ranked second, claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June before securing his second major of the year in New York in September. His ascent to the summit has been particularly notable given the career-threatening ankle injury he sustained during the 2022 French Open semifinals. “It’s been a fantastic season for me, winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true,” Zverev said in a statement released by the ATP Tour. “So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury.”

At 29 years old and standing 1.98 meters tall, Zverev will be Germany’s first male tennis player to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking, joining female compatriots Angelique Kerber and Steffi Graf, both former year-end leaders on the women’s tour. He is expected to officially receive the award in November.

Zverev’s achievement arrives amid a challenging year for other top-ranked players. Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who held the No. 1 spot before Zverev’s rise, has been sidelined since Wimbledon with a knee injury and announced his season’s end last week. Spain’s Alcaraz, ranked third, also faced a wrist injury that kept him out from April until the US Open, affecting his ability to defend points throughout the season.

In other tennis developments in China, Filipino player Alexandra Eala experienced a setback at the Wuhan Open, losing a three-set match to China’s Shi Han on October 12. Eala, ranked 19th globally and a WTA title winner, fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to the lower-ranked qualifier. Shi, ranked outside the top 200 and carrying limited tour-level wins, capitalized on her powerful backhand and momentum to secure her first victory over a top-100 player. This upset follows a previous unexpected loss for Eala in September when she was defeated by Tatiana Prozorova at the Singapore Open.

Eala, 21, had missed the recent China Open to compete at the Asian Games in Japan, where she was the top seed but earned a bronze medal. She will not face an easy challenge moving forward, with her next opponent set to be Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist.

Zverev’s forthcoming recognition as year-end world No. 1 underscores a significant shift at the top of men’s tennis, with injuries to his closest rivals playing a role in shaping the rankings during a season marked by high-profile comebacks and surprising results.
